Soda? No thanks, just water please.
Posted on 2011-03-21 10:23:58
I’ve been warning readers of the dangers of soda since I started this site, well over a decade ago. Since then, science has caught up; now definitively showing the profound health risks of this popular beverage.
Amazingly, as of 2005, white bread was dethroned by soft drinks as the number one source of calories in the American diet! I keep repeating that statistic because I find it so incredible. According to recent statistics, Americans consume close to 50 billion liters of soda per year, which equates to about 216 liters, or about 57 gallons per person. That equates to a staggering amount of sugar!
Play-By-Play of what Happens in Your Body when You Drink a Soda
Soda is on my list of the five absolute worst foods and drinks you can consume. The video above offers a compelling illustration of why I make this claim.
In it, reporter Yunji DeNies drinks a 20-ounce glass of cola, which contains the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). This is nearly three times the maximum daily sugar intake recommended by the American Heart Association.
HFCS typically contains a mixture of 45 percent glucose and 55 percent fructose (although recent investigations have found that many brand-name sodas actually contain 65 percent fructose!).
Once ingested, your pancreas rapidly begins to create insulin in response to the sugar. The rise in blood sugar is quite rapid. Here’s a play-by-play of what happens in your body upon drinking a can of soda:
- Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.
- Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. As you could see in the report above, DeNies’ blood glucose level was 79 at the outset of the experiment, and after 40 minutes it had risen to 111!
- Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain – a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.
- After 60 minutes, you’ll start to have a blood sugar crash, and you may be tempted to reach for another sweet snack or beverage.
As I’ve discussed on numerous occasions, chronically elevated insulin levels (which you would definitely have if you regularly drink soda) and the subsequent insulin resistance is a foundational factor of most chronic disease, from diabetes to cancer.

Cleanse Program
Posted on 2009-10-16 07:05:24
Hi all- I am on day 4 of my biannual Body Detoxification Program and I am feeling great- more energy than ever- sleeping like a baby and enjoying the freshness of daily fruits and veggies only. It is amazing how changing your diet makes such a difference in your life! I am in the holistic field and comprehend it in a practical sort of way, but when you see such incredible changes in how you feel just by avoiding some food groups, it is fantastic. For me- I never considered myself a poor eater to begin with, but with this cleanse it has brought to light that some of my food choices are not the best. For instance, when we go out to eat, I might choose a healthy entree, but believe me, I don't avoid the bread or the dessert or a couple of glasses of wine! These choices aren't terrible if it is only once a month- but with my schedule I am eating out pretty often, and the desserts are usually a part of my going out to eat experience!
When eating at home, I like to make soups, veggie soups are great for the cleanse program. Couliflour soup is one of my favorites- easy to make, tasty and sooo nutritious!
You make it by starting with a chopped onion and chopped couli. Saute onions in the saucepan in olive oil until soft. Add the chopped couli and cover to release the water from the couli. This should take about 7 minutes or so. You can stir it time to time to keep the onions and couli from burning. Add water to cover the couli and one can of organic tomato sauce. Stir, add sea salt and pepper to taste. Let it cook until the couli is soft- about 45 minutes or so and serve immediately. When I am not cleansing, I add some pasta and grated cheese which makes it absolutely perfect but while cleansing it is couli straight up! Yum!
Stay tuned for more recipes...
Back to School
Posted on 2009-08-23 20:56:01
So, my community of Patchogue-Medford will soon be sending their children back to school. It is a great time of the year to have your children's eyes checked, overall health check up, but what about the spinal check up?
Whether your young one suffers with back pain or not, it is still important to have a spinal check up. Diseases like scoliosis are not always painful to a growing child, but it can be devastating to your child's health. Scoliosis is a disease that is not properly managed can become so bad that surgery will be required. So- maybe a 30 minute spinal check up isn't such a strange idea! The evaluation can be a life changer for you and your child!!
Car Accident Victim

What You Should Know If You Have Been Involved In An Auto Accident
Sufffolk County, Long Island is home to a multitude of vehicles on the road. If you had the unfortunate incident of having a car accident and live near Patchogue, then I encourage you to read this blog entry. It can keep you from becoming an even further victim of unfortunate circumstances.
Did you know that one of the most stressful aspects of living in modern life is dealing with the problems that arise after an auto accident? Were you also aware that some auto accident injuries are hidden and are seldom detected for months or even years? As a result, two things can occur when an injury is not taken care of properly, or the accident victims settle their case with the insurance companies before getting evaluated from a Doctor trained in soft tissue injuries.
... This Could Be A Big Mistake.
Why? Because once you settle your case, you lose the right to have your insurance company pay for treatment if you need it. A good rule of thumb is to be informed of your rights and then make a decision. It is our position that if you were indeed injured, you should get the care you need to get you back to the way you felt and functioned just before the accident.
It is not the responsibility of the insurance company to pay for anything more than that. They are not responsibile for pre-existing injuries; only the injuries sustained from the accident. Even if you are just sore, you should get checked out immediately because you may experience pain, numbness, headaches, muscle stiffness, fatigue, and other problems including arthritis many months down the road. Remember, nothing is more important than your health, especially when you start to lose it.
Here's where the problem begins... Most people who suffer from an auto accident have one thing on their mind: their automobile!
Common questions include:
- "Who is going to fix my car?"
- "What will I drive in the mean time?"
- "Will my insurance rates go up?"
- "Who is going to pay for it?"
- And the last thing on their mind is: "Am I Really O.K.?"
Not only are auto accidents an inconvenience and a hassle, a common redundant complaint of auto accident victims is that they don't feel like their normal selves. You may also be experiencing obvious pains and symptoms like muscle stiffness or spasm, neck pain, headaches, numbness and tingling, back pain, difficulty sleeping, irritability, memory loss, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and many other difficulties. Or worse than that, you may be injured and feel nothing at all.
Either way, did you know that auto accidents can cause post-traumatic osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis can ruin your posture (giving you a slumped or hump back appearance). Osteoarthritis can cause the discs in your spine to degenerate and create scar tissue formation leading to chronic stiffness and the inability to move properly.
As a matter of fact...
- Most Doctors Are Not Trained In The Detection Of These Hidden Injuries...
- If you have been in an auto accident, you need a doctor who is trained in the biomechanics of the human body; someone who treats these injuries every day. In addition,x-rays can be taken to find out if there has been any structural damage. In our office, we evaluate auto accident victims and make any appropriate referrals to other health care providers if needed.
- Our primary responsibility is giving you the care if you need It, and submitting the required medical reports to the insurance company so your rights are protected.
If we can't help you, we will refer you to a doctor or facility that can.
If you have been in an auto accident recently, there are some important decisions you have to make, and if I were you, I'd make these decisions very carefully.
- Q: Should I See An Attorney Before I See My Chiropractor?
A: It is important to get checked out by the doctor first. That way the findings from your exam will allow you the information you need in order to decide if an attorney is necessary. If necessary, we can help you to find a reputable and qualified attorney.
- Q: What If My Car Sustained Only Minor Damage?
A: Documented studies done by Charles Carroll, M.D., Paul McAtee, M.D. and Lee Riley, M.D. revealed that: "The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to the force applied to the cervical spine (neck) of the occupants."
In other words, the damage to the passengers is not necessarily directly related to the damage to the vehicle.
- Q: If I Need Treatment For This Injury, Do I Have To Pay For It Myself?
A: No, in New York State, you are covered under "no-fault insurance medical pay". This will cover chiropractic treatment, medical massage therapy, acupuncture and medical tests like MRI's or X-rays. It also covers medical doctors like neurologists, orthopedists, and physiatrists. And, most important fact for you to know, using your medical coverage should not raise your premiums.
- Q: The Insurance Company Has Been Calling Me And Wants To Settle,What Should I Do?
A: Do not sign or settle until you have had us evaluate your injury for you. If you settle before your injury is fully resolved, you will be completely on your own and will have to pay out of pocket for your care. I always recommend consulting with an attorney who has experience in these type of accident cases. I recommend Paul Lauto in Miller Place and Matthew Glassman in Port Jefferson when patient's ask me for a recommendation. However, there are many attorneys who specialize in accident cases and you can easily find them on the web or in your local phone book.
- Q: I've Been To The Hospital And My Medical Doctor, Do I Really Need to See a Chiropractor?
A: You need a doctor who focuses in the treatment and diagnosis of auto accident injuries. Usually hospitals will check vital signs, make sure there are no life-threatening conditions and release the patient with pain relief medication. They normally do not treat the underlying improper musculoskeletal biomechanics that can and often do lead to future pain. If you are still having problems, you should get a second opinion.
If your M.D. has given you pills, you must understand that pills do not correct structural or soft tissue damage. There are special therapies designed for that, and we offer these modalities at our office.
- Q: Does Your Care Hurt?
A: Absolutely not. The care is very gentle and quite soothing. Most patients can hardly wait to get their care.
- Q: Is The Care Safe?
A: Yes, extremely. Particularly when compared to the side effects from medication. Chiropractic, medical massage therapy and acupuncture offered at Fasulo Chiropractic are all modalities designed to let your body heal itself.
What's Really in Chicken McNuggets
Posted on 2009-08-12 11:40:01
McDonalds chicken nuggets are a favourite with children in many families. Parents buy the ‘chicken nuggets’ believing they are indeed made from just chicken. McDonalds even provides flyers titled “A Full Serving of Nutrition Facts: Choose the Best Meal for You.”
However as you can see from the ingredient list below, there is a lot more than just chicken. Chicken, water, salt, modified cornstarch, sodium phosphates, chicken broth powder (chicken broth, salt, and natural flavoring (chicken source)), seasoning (vegetable oil, extracts of rosemary, mono, di- and triglycerides, lecithin). Battered and breaded with water, enriched bleached wheat flour (niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, bleached wheat flour, modified corn starch, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate), spices, wheat starch, dried whey, corn starch. Batter set in vegetable shortening.
Cooked in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, (may contain partially hydrogenated soybean oil and/or partially hydrogenated corn oil and/or partially hydrogenated canola oil and/or cottonseed oil and/or sunflower oil and/or corn oil) THESE ARE TRANS FATS. TBHQ and citric acid added to help preserve freshness. Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an anti-foaming agent. There are 38 ingredients in a McNugget; many of them made from corn. Further down the list there are the mono, diandtriglycerides, and the emulsifiers that keep the fats and the water from separating. More corn flour is used to make the batter, and the hydrogenated oil in which the nuggets are fried can come from soybeans, canola or cottonseed, depending on the market price. It gets worse: a number of the ingredients come from petroleum products, to keep the items from spoiling or ‘looking strange’ after months in the freezer or on the road. If you are truly worried, look up these ingredients: sodium aluminum phosphate; mono-calcium phosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, and calcium lactate. These are used to keep the animal and vegetable fats from turning rancid.
Then there are “anti foaming” agents like dimethylpolysiloxene. According to the Handbook of Food Additives, this material is a suspected carcinogen and an established mutagen, tumorigenic, and reproductive effector. It is also flammable. The most alarming ingredient in Chicken McNuggets is “tertiary butyl hydroquinone,” or TBHQ, derived from petroleum. This is sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to “help preserve freshness.” Again, according to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food. It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse.” Ingesting five grams can be fatal. Do you really want to give your kids Chicken McNuggets?
